TRAVEL GUIDE
Costs
While I’m unable to cover all expenses, I’m pleased to invite you to a few things along the way. Here are the main costs you should plan for:
- Flight to Kenya
- Accommodation in Nairobi: If you’re sharing an Airbnb, expect to pay around €40 per night per person.
- Flight from Nairobi to Ukunda: Currently about €80 per person.
- Shared Houses in Msambweni: Costs are no more than €40 per night per person.
- Travel Back from Msambweni
SIM Cards
As its important for all of us to remain connected, it’s a good idea to get a local SIM card. They’re readily available at the airport and I’d recommend the provider Safaricom.
M-PESA / Cash
In most restaurants you can pay by card and cash is also available via ATMs, which should cover you for the duration of your stay.
If you decide to stay in Kenya for longer, M-Pesa is the most convenient payment method. It allows you to transfer money using your phone number or app, so with that you won’t need much cash. To add funds to your M-Pesa account, use WISE to send money once your account is set up with a Kenyan phone number.
Visa
Kenya has transitioned to an eTA system, replacing traditional visas. Please verify the latest requirements yourself, but you can apply for the eTA on the official website. Based on personal experience, it’s advisable to apply as early as possible but only to the point that your visa is still valid, ideally at least 4 weeks in advance.
Seriously though, I wrote this in July and things can change quickly – you’re best advised to check the official site!
Getting Around
Public transportation in Kenya mainly consists of Matatus, which have colorful designs but aren’t ideal for tourists. The best and safest option is to use Uber, which is both convenient and cost-effective. While short walks in Nairobi are generally safe during the day, the lack of sidewalks makes Uber the preferred choice for getting around.
